Clinical Skills Assessment (CSA-R)

The Clinical Skills Assessment (CSA-R) is a holistic assessment that rounds out what is to be assessed to ensure the graduation competencies have been addressed. In certain situations, it can be used as a formative assessment or simply a way to submit MSPE comments.

How are CSA-Rs completed?

CSA-R assessments are submitted through a student-initiated Qualtrics survey. The link to the survey can be found in the student user guide. While they are student-driven, CSA-R ratings and feedback must be provided by a clinical supervisor. After a CSA-R is submitted, a confirmation email will be delivered to the student and assessor, including all of the information entered in the Qualtrics survey, and data will be visible on Tableau dashboards.

What are the CSA-R requirements?

Students are required to have a Mid Clerkship CSA-R and Final Clerkship CSA-R completed for them for all core required clerkships and LIC’s. More details of these requirements can be found in the user guides.

What are the different types of CSA-Rs?

The clinical skills assessment (CSA-R) is intended to provide actionable feedback for growth. The mid and final CSA-R forms are intended to be completed in conjunction with a meeting between the student and assessor to discuss the student's clinical skills.

Frequent CSA-R

  • The frequent CSA-R form is used to provide actionable feedback for growth. This is optional and is used in clerkships that need to collect data before or between the mid and final CSA-R. It is up to the clerkship leadership to determine if and how frequently this form is used.

MID-clerkship CSA-R

  • The mid-clerkship CSA-R form provides actionable feedback for growth. It is completed in the mid-clerkship feedback meeting. Feedback should be early enough in the clerkship so that students have time to demonstrate that they have incorporated the feedback and made improvements.

Final Clerkship CSA-R

  • The final clerkship CSA-R form provides final, actionable feedback for growth and contributes to the student's overall grade.
